It’s now the third time around for the Freedom of Information Act, and questions still remain about whether this Act will ever become the kind of reality that is in line with what is needed from such a law.
Part 5 of the Act, which calls for the establishment of the Freedom of Information Unit and the Office of the Information Commissioner, was among several Parts of the Act that were set to come into force back in April of this year. The new administration’s Speech from the Throne – which is the government’s legislative agenda for a given Session of Parliament – made no mention of the Freedom of Information Act. The 2017/2018 Budget also makes no provision for the establishment of the Freedom of Information Unit or the appointment of the Information Commissioner.
What is the definitive plan moving forward for this piece of legislation?
